Custom Modern/Industrial stair case

I worked with a custom steel fabricating company on this beautiful custom home staircase. We tried to get a rustic enough look while still retaining a modern style to accent the style of the home. These stair treads are solid wood and 4" thick. They are bleached, stained and finished to hold up to heavy traffic over the years.

For the customer it was important for the treads to be a solid piece. This made selecting the type of wood a little tricky. This is because there are not very many species of wood that are milled and sold in a thicker dimension than 2.5" thick. Douglas Fir (pine) is one of the few that is available over 4". The challenge with Douglas-Fir is the color. When it is stained or finished it will have a yellow or orange color to it. (Which most people are NOT fans of) To fix this problem we bleached the wood multiple times to get it to a lighter and more natural color. We then applied stain and clear coat for protection.

Another nice feature of these stairs is the mounting style. The steel stringers of the stairs have a 36" x 8" mounting plate for the wood stair tread. So you can just bolt the tread right onto the plate. But once they are mounted you can see the plate on the under side of the stair. we really wanted the overall look to be as clean as possible. So we decided to route out the exact size of the plate on the underside of each stair tread. This meant that the mounting plate would recess up into the tread, hiding it completely. Not only did this make the stairs look much better, but also made the mounting of them stronger.

We were very happy with the way these stairs came out and can't wait for the next custom stair project!
